GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Road work will soon begin on Ottawa Avenue NW from Michigan Street NW to Fulton Street W in Grand Rapids.

The construction is set to begin Wednesday, June 16 and will end before ArtPrize begins in September.

According to the city, Ottawa Avenue NW will be rotomilled, resurfaced and enhanced with new streetscaping, bike parking and streetlights. The project will also upgrade sidewalks and ramps to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The project costs a total of $2.83 million and is funded through the city’s Vital Streets millage with additional Michigan Department of Transportation Surface Transportation Funding Urban (STPU) and Downtown Development Authority support.

Work will start on the east side of the street and will then move to the west side. While work is being done on the east side of the street, one lane will be open on the west side and vise-versa.

“We are working to minimize impacts to residents and businesses located along this project and will actively manage traffic control and minimize restrictions whenever possible,” City Engineer Tim Burkman said. “Local access will be maintained with proper pedestrian access to all businesses throughout the project through coordination, temporary pavement and temporary access methods.”

More information on the project can be found here.
