Ottawa County officials warn of potential Grand River ice jams causing rapid flooding

Although the rise of water levels on the Grand River are predicted to be minor, ice jams could cause rapid flooding near bridges, dams and basins.

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Management is warning of the possibility of ice jams on the Grand River.

Water levels on the Grand River are being monitored and aren't expected to rise to a level that can cause significant flooding. But the forecasted rainfall and melting snow and ice can cause perfect conditions for ice jams on the Grand River.

Ice that is broken up from rising waters and warmer temperatures can obstruct the flow of the river near bridges or constricted bends in the river causing rapid flooding.

"For individuals who live next to or near the river, water levels due to ice jams can rise so quickly that the time to react is limited.  If your home could be affected by the Grand River, please consider ways that you can prepare beforehand for a quick departure from your home, as well as limiting property losses," the Ottawa County Sherriff's department warns in a statement.

They encourage residents who live along the river to take precautionary measures like raising items off of the ground level and having a “go bag” of clothing, extra medications and a charger for mobile electronic devices.

It is also advised if you do experience flooding in your home, not to enter any rooms with standing water that have electronics or electrical outlets.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor the water levels on the Grand River.
