'She's the strongest woman I know' | Postal worker and family overwhelmed by support after crash

Dora Schweiger is recovering after her USPS truck and a semi-truck collided during blizzard- like conditions.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — It's been nearly a week since a local postal worker was involved in a serious head-on crash.

Dora Schweiger of Sand Lake is recovering from her injuries after her USPS truck and a semi collided during blizzard-like conditions.

Michigan State Police report the crash happened on M-57 near Shaner Avenue on Friday, Dec. 23.

"She remembers fishtailing, but she doesn't know how she was fishtailing," said Schweiger's oldest daughter, Kendra Jones.

It was a horrific crash most wouldn't survive, but Schweiger did.

Although she has broken bones nearly all over her body, she doesn't have a broken spirit.

"She has good days and bad days. She's hanging in there," said Jones. "She's the strongest woman I know and if anyone can do this, it's her."

Schweiger was taken to the hospital where she underwent surgery, and after nearly a week, was discharged Thursday to a rehabilitation center.

After creating a GoFundMe page, the family has been overwhelmed by the loving and supportive comments they've received from people from all over the country.

"My mom is thrilled to see that," said Jones. "It brings tears to her eyes as we were just reading through comments about where people are and how far this story has gone. I think it's also solidifying to her to see how close knit the postal service really is as a whole family."

Jones said that depending on her mom's recovery, she may be wheelchair-bound.

Although the future isn't clear, Jones' main focus remains on taking care of the person who took care of her for 31 years.

"These tragedies are going to strike at the worst times and you're not going to see it coming. Your world is going to spin so how hold on to those you can hold to now," said Jones.
